Well known from uniforms geeks, this document shows very well the many shades of “Field grey” used during the Third Reich. And this is only the infantry. Worth noticing: the change from a green shade of field grey to brown and grey. Also, in the middle of the lower row, two samples of the new battle dress, cut in olive brown and faded grey green. Why do U.S. Navy personnel wear blue and white camouflage? The only reason that occurs to me is to blend into the rough seas, but if you fall overboard I would think that would be the last thing you want. It’s not camouflage, it’s stain-flage. Really, it’s to hide stains from acquired from working in machine spaces better. Stains would render a uniform unwearable from failing inspection. Stains are harder to notice now with the new pattern. There was a practical reason behind it, if you rode a horse. Many senior officers in the first half of the twentieth century came from privileged backgrounds and illustrious cavalry regiments.
