I likened the end of the Black Plague to a fire burning itself out. Global travel is like a hurricane, picking up all the burning embers and spreading them all over the countryside. Suddenly, you’ve got fires everywhere. No. Typhus refers to a group of infectious diseases that are caused by rickettsial microorganisms that are transmitted to humans by arthropod vectors and causes an acute febrile illness. Rickettsia prowazekii is the major etiologic agent of typhus. Rickettsial organisms are considered an intermediate between viruses and bacteria. The arthropod vector is the body louse (Pediculus corporis) in epidemic typhus. They could also be transmitted by fleas. Plague is an acute, contagious, febrile illness caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis , which is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected flea. The classic vector is the oriental rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis. It occurs as 3 major clinical events: bubonic plague, septicemic plague, and pneumonic plague. Plague is an acute infectious bacterial disease of animals. Colonies of several species of rodent serve as sources of infection (amplifying hosts) for the flea vectors of the disease. Humans (and other species) become involved from time to time, typically where a rodent colony experiences an epizootic of plague, and humans come into contact with infected fleas from that outbreak. Gophers, prairie dogs, several types of rats and mice, ground squirrels, chipmunks, and lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) can be infected. Domestic cats can become infected and experience swollen lymph nodes.
